This month’s interview features Alex, a 29-year-old black traveler from Northern California. His journey and the obstacles he faced, both racial and non-racial, before and during his travels, provide a unique perspective that is often overlooked. His story is a testament to the resilience and determination needed to embrace the world through a personal lens.
As a white traveler, my experiences differ significantly from those of others who face various prejudices. This platform, titled “Nomadic Matt,” aims to be a resource for all travelers, and incorporating diverse voices like Alex’s is essential. Today, we delve into Alex’s journey and insights.
Meet Alex: A Journey Begins
Nomadic Matt: Welcome, Alex! Please share a bit about your background.
Alex: I’m originally from Alameda, a city near San Francisco. After obtaining my degree in Arizona, I returned to the Bay Area and worked in finance. Ultimately, I made the bold choice to quit my job and travel the world.
This decision surprised my mom and friends, but it was a necessary leap for my personal growth.
The Inspiration to Travel
What motivated your adventure?
Simply put, I wanted to explore the world. More deeply, I sought to experience it through my own eyes. In today’s digital age, we are bombarded with images and narratives from around the globe, yet I felt compelled to engage with those places directly and forge my own understanding through conversation and experience.
My initial plan was to travel for six months, but 11 months later, I’m still on the road!
Funding the Journey
How did you finance your travels?
I spent five years working in finance, diligently saving for my travels. Once I committed to this journey, I made sacrifices—like skipping local trips and dining out less—to boost my travel fund.
After researching various travel blogs and reading your book, How to Travel the World on $50 a Day, I managed to save $25,000 for a year of travel. This involved automatic paycheck deposits and cutting down on non-essential expenses.
As departure day approached, I sold furniture and other belongings, and my final work bonus provided a helpful boost. It took over a year to save enough for this trip, but I believe the sacrifices were worth it.
Overcoming Barriers: The Reality of Traveling While Black
Why do you think fewer people of color travel?
The phrase “you’re acting white” has followed me throughout my life. When I showed interest in education and finance, it was seen as behaving “white.” And now, as I travel, I’m met with the same sentiment.
Traveling is often viewed as a privilege linked to socioeconomic status, which can discourage people of color. However, if travel is a priority, it is possible to pursue it without being part of the upper class.
Moreover, exposure plays a crucial role. Many people lack role models in their family or community who travel, which may lead to the belief that it isn’t attainable or worthwhile.
- Many minorities travel predominantly to familiar destinations.
- Traveling to new places, like Southeast Asia, often feels out of reach.
- Generational struggles for civil rights may have prioritized immediate survival over exploration.
Shifting Perspectives
How can we change the narrative around travel for minorities?
Changing perceptions about travel among minority communities will require time and education. I see positive movement through various organizations working to raise awareness, particularly among younger generations.
Social media amplifies this effort, allowing diverse travel experiences to reach broader audiences. A stunning image of Thailand may inspire someone of color to envision travel as a dream worth pursuing, regardless of challenges.
Experiences of Racism While Traveling
Have you encountered racism on your travels? If so, how did you handle it?
I anticipated facing racism abroad, especially in Europe and Asia. However, during my nine months of traveling through various cities, I encountered only minor ignorance and no overt racism.
For instance, while in a small town near Montenegro, I realized I was likely the first black person many locals had seen. A group of teenagers yelled a hip-hop greeting at me from their car. Initially taken aback, I soon realized they were merely mimicking what they had learned from music without understanding its connotations.
In many cases, I feel that my American identity overshadows my race, as travelers are often more curious about cultural differences than focused on skin color.
Advice for Travelers of Color
What guidance would you give to travelers of color concerned about racism?
Racism is unfortunately prevalent. When placing oneself in unfamiliar settings, experiencing “othering” is common. It’s vital to distinguish between racism and ignorance.
Travelers may find themselves in homogenous areas where meeting a person of color is rare. Use these moments to share your story and culture. A friendly smile and conversation can bridge gaps and foster understanding.
If faced with discrimination, I recommend removing yourself from the situation calmly. Allowing negativity to provoke a reaction can tarnish your travel experience. Remember, the world is rich with kind-hearted individuals who are eager to connect.
Moments of Realization on the Road
When did you realize, “Wow! I’m really doing this!”?
Those moments occur frequently. From my first train ride across Europe, gazing out at the picturesque landscapes between Stockholm and Copenhagen, to sitting atop a pagoda in Myanmar at sunrise, I often reflect on the incredible experiences this journey offers.
Practical Travel Tips for Budget-Conscious Adventurers
How do you stretch your budget while traveling?
Controlling alcohol spending is crucial; it can quickly add up. Seek out happy hour specials or consider buying drinks from a store to enjoy in a scenic outdoor setting.
Sometimes, the best nights are those spent with friends, laughter, and music in a park rather than a crowded bar.
Key Advice for New Travelers
If you could share three essential tips with new travelers, what would they be?
- Plan your trip, but don’t over-schedule. Leave space for spontaneous adventures and new friendships.
- Engage with locals by putting down your phone and initiating conversations. Real-life interactions far surpass social media scrolling.
- Challenge yourself by tackling fears or trying new activities. For instance, I faced my fear of open water by scuba diving and hiked 5,000 steps up Adams Peak in Sri Lanka.
Additionally, consider ways to give back while traveling, such as volunteering or engaging in responsible tourism. Supporting local communities enhances your travel experience and leaves a positive impact.
